AM: Cup Race 2

The race started in very light airs with sixteen boats crossing the start line 
at a snails pace.  Jane Anderson soon asserted herself at the front with 
John Savage and Mary Carter also going well. Alan Comber and John 
Weller in the Enterprise also made the early running, with Jane Chadney 
and Nicky Buckett then moving through to try and Challenge Jane 
Anderson.  Derek Farnfield in his new Streaker and Adeney Pooler in his 
re-modelled Graduate were also making the early running but as they 
headed to Far buoy the wind shifted and both began to drop away from 
the front runners.

It was not the wind for Toppers and so John and Vicki Duncalf struggled 
to sail up to handicap. However, John Chandler in the Bosun seemed to 
find good patches of wind nobody else could and managed to keep in 
contact with the front runners.  The wind in it's most fickle of modes, 
seemed to play into the hands of the fully rigged Lasers. Lasers were the 
first six boats home and also the first six on handicap. Jane Anderson led 
the way home with Jane Chadney producing a fine performance to get 
second place. Mary Carter was especially pleased to finish fifth and in the 
process beating Roger Heasman. Katie Leveridge seemed unable to make 
her lighter weight count in the Laser Radial and Emily Veal in the Laser 
4.7 also struggled.  Stephanie Heasman had a difficult moment when she 
got into irons right on the last buoy before the finish line. This left her 
frustrated and lost her a couple of handicap positions.

PM: Ladies Cup/Junior Helm/Gosling Shield

A slightly stronger wind for the afternoon saw the men chasing the ladies  
all around the lake!  Adeney Pooler in the Graduate had a secret weapon 
on board in the form of Paul Whybrow, got away first and had a very 
competitive race. ( Paul hates being beaten!) Jane Anderson soon asserted 
a lead ahead of Adeney, with the rest of the fleet starting to close up. 
Nicky Buckett and Simon Veal both got slow starts and found themselves 
listening to the sound of Toppers drumming to the beat of a sudden 
prolonged gust! (Simon subsequently boasted about his stupendous 
performance up at Far when he got a wind lift, overtook four boats in one 
fell swoop and moved into fourth position. He would have jumped for 
joy, only he takes up too much cockpit room!)  For Katie Leveridge it 
seemed to be a case of 'from chalk to cheese'.   Katie really got her Laser 
Radial pointing higher than anybody else, which enabled her to overtake 
Nicky Buckett who then responded quickly with a re-pass.  Jane Chadney 
spent the afternoon gunning for Simon Veal and finally wore him down 
one second before the finish line with Katie just managing to hold off 
Roger Heasman by four seconds.

It was good to see four juniors out enjoying the sunshine in their first race 
of the season with Adam Pollard in the Laser Pico managing to beat 
Fraser Martyn in the bigger Laser 4.7. Fraser unfortunately rounded a 
buoy to the wrong side and had to be disqualified.  Mary Carter definitely 
seemed to 'have it in' for John Savage today. Having called John for 
water in the morning race when John had rights to the water, in the 
afternoon race Mary told John he had gone the wrong side of the buoy 
when in fact he was correct.( A slightly bemused Mr Savage!)
