AM: Tamar Trophy 2 In light winds, Bob Sampson and Jane Anderson were first away, with Mike Ford well up in the Wanderer. Places changed on the rounded Dam and headed towards West, but Jane Anderson kept ahead of Bob and Jane Chadney, with Roger Ford and Val Shillito making progress in the Wayfarer. Some of the boats gradually lost touch with the leading group, with the Alan Comber in the Enterprise and Derek Farnfield in the Wanderer dropping off the pace and John Savage in the Solo also finding the going tough after the first lap. At the front, Jane Anderson had achieved a comfortable lead over Bob, but then got her mainsheet caught on a mooring buoy, which allowed Bob to catch up. Thereafter they remained in close contention until the end, with Bob managing to cross the line first, just two seconds ahead of Jane. David Higgs was next boat home, ten seconds ahead of Jane Chadney, but Mike Ford had an excellent race in the Wanderer to take third place on handicap. A good breeze on the leg to Inlet saw Toby's Bosun going well, in front of Jane Chadney. Next came the Toppers of Vicki and John Duncalf, tussling Mike Ford, who had swapped boats and was out in the Solo. With John Weller at the helm, the Enterprise then moved up to split the Toppers as they headed across to West. By the start of the second lap, Bob Sampson had moved up to take the lead ahead of Jane Anderson, with Roger Ford's Wayfarer tussling with Jane Chadney's Laser for third and fourth. Not far behind came the Wanderer of Derek Farnfield (now with Paul Whybrow as crew), but they then proceeded to miss out the Green Dam mark and lost time in doubling back, though still managing to keep Toby at bay. Meg Higgs in the Topper was doing well to keep in sight of the other boats, but decided to retire at the end of the first lap. The racing stayed very close on the second lap. Jane overtook Bob for the lead on the run down to the Dam, with Roger Ford and Jane Chadney side by side fighting for third place. The key deciding moment for the final result came on the beat from Dam Red to Dam Green, when Bob was on starboard tack and Jane Anderson had to take a penalty, leaving Bob well clear to be both first across the line and winner on handicap. With the breeze filling in on the third lap, Jane Chadney pulled away from Roger Ford, but despite finishing in front, Roger claimed third place on handicap by just a few seconds, with Toby doing well to bring the heavy Bosun home in fifth on handicap.
