AM: Sailboat Trophy 3 Seemingly spurred on by having his son Lee on board as crew, Bob Sampson got a good start in the RS 200. Jane Anderson, Simon Veal and Roger Heasman were all over the line at the start and whilst Jane turned back, Roger, being hemmed in didn't turn back and was disqualified. Simon meanwhile, didn't realise that it was necessary to re-take the start line and did a 360 penalty turn instead which subsequently unfortunately led to his disqualification. All the boats were jostling for position going to West mark with Bob rounding first, Steve Axford second and Neil Wallace with Nicky Buckett third. Just after West, Chris Bellairs racing in the RS Vision for his first senior race and with Will Pepworth mentoring as crew suddenly pirouetted out of control. The reason quickly became evident as Chris stood with a look of amazement brandishing a broken tiller before being quickly ejected from the boat along with Will as the sail crashed to the water. As the boats headed out to Far, the fleet split into two groups with the second group being headed by Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise. Alan and John were sailing well and climbing their way through the fleet on the water if not on handicap. They are also giving the two Wanderers of Mike Ford and Derek Farnfield a good run for their money. The second and third laps brought lapses of concentration on the parts of Mary Carter in the Laser and Stephanie in the Topper as they both rounded buoys on the wrong side and were disqualified. Whilst Bob and Lee Sampson brought the RS 200 home in first place on the water, Jane Anderson was the pick of the fleet. Over the course of the race she shortened the distance between herself and the front three boats, enabling her to win the race on handicap. Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett managed to take the lead by the time the boats reached the West mark and stayed in front for the duration of the race. Stephanie Heasman got caught by a huge gust just after West which pitched her out of the Topper making her decide it was time to retire gracefully for an early hot shower. Bob and Lee Sampson, whilst having a close tussle with Steve Axford and Simon Veal, suddenly veered of course as they rounded the Far Mark. The cause of the sudden problem was the main sheet wrapping around the tiller. Lee in his first races with his father, was given an early lesson in the art of helming, as Bob managed a very quick recovery. Shortly afterwards there was a collision between the two Wanderers at Far with Derek Farnfield's Wanderer losing its mainsail and ending up on the beach. Steve Axford sailing the smaller radial sail on his Laser managed to keep Simon Veal at bay for the whole race, whilst Bob and Lee passed Simon on the second lap, only to have Simon retake them on the final lap. A sneaky extra buoy at Middle added to the course by the Officer of the Day gave all the helms problems in trying to make up to it without tacking. Windsurfers didn't help with the difficulty, as they seemed for some reason to be attracted to the buoy like bees round a honey pot. Having got over his earlier collision, Mike Ford with Adeney Pooler as crew in the Wanderer sailed a solid race in the middle of the fleet managing to gradually close down on Jane Andersons Laser 4.7. Mary Carter also managed to put distance between herself and John Buckett in the Otter, as John had a tussle at the end of the second lap with David Harker and Fraser Martyn in the RS Feva. Nicky and Neil managed to finish first on handicap, with Steve Axford second. Simon Veal was very pleased with himself for staying dry and finishing fourth on handicap.
