Being a Bank Holiday week-end, Saturday and Monday were given over to fun team racing with thirteen boats taking part Saturday and nine on Monday. Chaos rained as intended, with everybody thoroughly enjoying themselves. The highlight has to be the sight of four young sailors doing synchronised capsizing, purposefully determined to get wet! Sunday's racing was back to the more serious stuff which included a lunch time Peter Pocock Junior race. Unfortunately Joe Hedges, who was really keen to race even in the strong wind, ended up being taken to Stratton where a torn ligament was diagnosed. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back racing soon. AM: Sailboat Trophy 4 With the wind gusting, even before race start, David Harris with young crew Megan Chadney ended up on the lee shore needing to be rescued. Tom Molton in the Pico also capsized, managed to start the race, then hurt himself and had to retire. The rest of the racers got underway without trouble, however the first lap was not without further incident with Alan Comber and John Wellar in the Enterprise having a coming together at West buoy with Mike Ford and Adeney Pooler in the Wanderer. This in turn led to John Savage having to take avoiding action, and in the process damaging his finger. John's Solo then retired, whilst the other two boats carried on. At the end of the first lap Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer had established a lead which they were never to lose. Simon Veal in the fully rigged Laser with dogged determination and a lot of rocking and rolling pushed them hard all the way. Jane Chadney was also having a good race, whilst Jane Anderson in the Topper started to get into a two-lap dog fight with Mike Ford's Wanderer. At times Jane could be seen slip streaming Mikes wake and then using her increased speed to overtake him. ( Water born Formula One!) Stephanie Heasman also sailing a Topper crashed heavily as she developed a death roll on the run and decided to retire gracefully. David Higgs and Roger Heasman in Laser 4.7's were having a tussle when Roger capsized letting David through and then hittting Middle buoy. This then set up a close finish for them from Dam Green buoy to the line on the final lap, with David just taking the line first. Jane Anderson's Formula One performance gave her the race on handicap, whilst Simon Veal was understandably frustrated that with handicapping he only finished fourth! Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Topper) 2nd Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 3rd Jane Chadney (Laser 4.7) 4th Simon Veal (Laser) 5th David Higgs (Laser 4.7) 6th Roger Heasman (Laser 4.7) 7th Mike Ford and Adeney Pooler (Wanderer) 8th Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise) Tom Moulton (Pico), Stephanie Heasman (Topper), John Savage (Solo) rtd David Harris and Megan Chadney (Otter) dns Lunchtime: Peter Pocock Junior Achievement Trophy. Four Pico's set out to race, Joe Hedges and Megan Higgs having opted to sail with reefed rig, whilst Fraser Martyn and Tom Moulton decided to sail fully rigged. In very gusty wind conditions Joe didn't manage to cross the start line, retiring hurt whilst only Tom got away well. He then soon got into difficulties allowing Megan through who then also got into difficulties at the middle mark. This allowed Fraser to pass Megan and sail on untroubled, to achieve his first ever win in the Pocock series. Tom and Megan then gave the spectators a thrilling finish to watch. Tom well ahead of Megan, capsized and could be seen clinging to the boat as it continued to sail lying on its side. Megan passed Tom and looked well set to finish second, but then also capsized. Having regained second and only yards from the finish line, Tom mistook the finish line buoy. With half the watching sailors yelling on Megan and the other half yelling on Tom, Megan just got over the line first. Despite his frustration, Tom still managed to come off the water with a broad grin of enjoyment written all across his face! Results: 1st Fraser Martyn 2nd Megan Higgs 3rd Tom Moulton. Joe Hedges rtd PM race: Tamar Cup 8 Neil and Nicky in the Wayfarer, David Higgs in the Laser 4.7 and Alan Comber and John Wellers Enterprise all got an excellent start, as twelve boats headed across the lake to the challenging West Mark. John Savage in the Solo sporting its resplendent new sail was also going very well. With the boats rounding West and heading across to the Middle mark Neil and Nicky led the fleet. The boats then moved on up the lake towards Pinkie Buoy with Katie Leveridge in her Laser 4.7 sailing brilliantly to move up into second place. Bob Sampson in the RS 200 and guest crew Megan Chadney, worked furiously to move into third position, with Simon Veal and David Higgs also giving chase. All the boats safely negotiated the dreaded shifty gybe at Pinkie to head down the lake to Inlet and then on towards Dam. With Megan having successfully set the asymmetric spinnaker, Bob's RS screamed down to Dam. Further down the fleet, Jane Chadney was doing battle with Roger Heasman for position with Mike and Adeney in the Wanderer also sailing well. John Savage having adjusted his mast position to suit the new Solo rig was finding new speed and keeping up well with Alan Comber and John Weller and Mike Ford. Alan made a valiant attempt at gunning down a three man day-tripper canoe, but thankfully only managed to scare them witless. The Enterprise retired shortly afterwards with jib gear failure, which must have been a huge relief for the canoe occupants! Meanwhile at the back of the fleet John Buckett in the Otter and Stephanie Heasman in the Topper were chasing each other with John having difficulty holding Stephanie off. Simon Veal managed to overhaul Katie to move into second place at race finish, behind Neil's Wayfarer. Jane Chadney also managed to overtake David Higgs just before the finish line. Neil freely admitted after the race that he kept looking back at Katie, muttering that he couldn't get far enough ahead to beat her on handicap. Since Katie is only just fourteen years old, she can well be forgiven her whoops of joy within Neil and Nicky's earshot, on finding out that she had won on handicap! Results: 1st Katie Leveridge (Laser 4.7) 2nd Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 3rd Jane Chadney (Laser 4,7) 4th David Higgs (Laser 4.7) 5th Roger Heasman (Laser 4.7) 6th Simon Veal (Laser) 7th Bob Sampson and Megan Chadney (RS200) 8th John Savage (Solo) 9th Stephanie Heasman (Topper) 10th John Buckett (Otter) 11th Mike Ford (Wanderer) Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise) rtd
