AM: Tamar Memorial Trophy 7
 
A fleet of 10 boats braved the start into lively force 3-4 winds making the tacking towards 
West mark hard work.  Steve Axford (Laser) just escapes from a closing sandwich between 
Vicki and John Duncalf in their Toppers.  Vicki now sailing her new retirement present to 
herself as she picked up her new 'love of her life' from Falmouth during the week!  Jane 
Anderson (Laser 4.7) and Steve lead the field out to Far mark with Alan Comber and crew 
John Weller (Enterprise) in hot pursuit and leading the main fleet which were closing from 
astern.  A fierce battle was taking place between that group all the way to Middle mark with 
Jane just rounding ahead of Steve, but a gust just pushed her on to the mark so she had to 
do a penalty turn and Steve took the lead!  Alan and John rounded together next with Toby 
Tobias and his motley crew (of Jenny Whybrow and Jane Chadney) close behind.  The rest of 
the fleet were now strung out, and at the beginning of Lap 2 Steve lead with Jane next then 
Alan, John and Toby very close, then Roger Heasman with crew James Pollard (Bosun), 
Vicki, Mary Carter (Laser 4.7), then Jon Sears (Topper) and Mike Lewis (Topper).  During this 
lap both John and Toby had overhauled Alan by the time they'd all reached West mark; Steve 
and Jane were still fighting each other in front, and Mary managed to overtake Roger.
 
On lap 3 Jane masters the overtaking of Steve on the upwind leg to West again and remains 
there to the end, Toby and Alan are locked in a duel with an exciting series of overtaking 
manoeuvres with Alan reaching Dam Green mark ahead, but Toby manages a better 
rounding before Alan sadly got involved in the model boat race taking place nearby and got 
caught on one of their marks allowing Mary to overtake.  All came home for a well deserved 
lunch in what was a rather chilly August Bank Holiday morning.

PM: Ladies Cup, Junior Helm and Gosling Shield Race 5
 
Steve Axford was first away, with Jane next, followed by Vicki and John in their Toppers once 
more.  The winds seemed to have moderated slightly, but the gusts still kept zooming in to 
keep helmsmen on their guard on the upwind leg to West.  Steve had been persuaded to 
change his sail at lunch time for the more manageable Radial and was coping much better.  
He led the fleet in to lap 2 followed by Jane then Toby, Alan, John Duncalf, Roger and Vicki, 
and the positions remained the same for lap 3.
