AM: Sailboat Trophy 5/ Commodore's Cup 1

After a good day on the Bank Holiday Saturday with members dressing 
up as pirates and having fun and games on the water, Sunday was back to 
the serious business. Just how serious could be easily judged at the start 
of the morning race, as at least five boats were over the line, jumping the 
start horn.  At the second attempt David Higgs got away first in his Laser 
followed by the Wayfarer with Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett aboard. 
Somehow David must have erred, as he moved away from the race line to 
do a penalty turn. This allowed Bob Sampson's RS200 (with yet another 
new lady crew Allison) to lead round Dam Green buoy and away across 
the lake to West.  Meanwhile the Toppers of Jane Anderson Stephanie 
Heasman and Megan Higgs were stuttering along together all finding the 
lack of wind (forecast 22mph) and drizzling rain hampering their best 
efforts.

At the end of the first lap Bob had established a clear lead in the RS with 
Neil and Nicky chasing in second. Then followed a bunch of four Lasers 
with Jane Chadney, Simon Veal and Katie Leveridge all managing to 
pass Roger Heasman as the lap ended. David Higgs meanwhile, was 
recovering well through the fleet and in hot pursuit of the other Lasers. 
Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise (dressed in hung over 
Saturday's pirate gear) were having their own private battle with Derek 
Farnfield in his Streaker.  The three Toppers were by now well spaced 
with David Harris in the Otter bringing up the rear.

On the second lap Jane Anderson started to get het Topper moving and 
threatening Derek's Streaker.  Bob Sampson and Allison were trying to 
use their spinnaker to keep the Wayfarer at bay but had problems with the 
spinnaker looking like an empty wine glass! Derek responded to Jane's 
advances by managing to move further ahead, whilst Megan Higgs was 
also putting distance between herself and Stephanie Heasmans Toppers.
On the last lap and at the finish Neil Wallace almost managed to catch 
Bob Sampson on the line whilst the duelling Lasers of Simon Veal, Jane 
Chadney and Katie Leveridge were third fourth and fifth respectively.

PM: Barnwell Cup 7/Ladies Cup, Junior Helm, Gosling Shield 5

The race started with almost total confusion owing to finger trouble on 
the electronic horn system.  Once the race settled down Jane Chadney 
established a lead in her Laser Radial closely followed by Neil Wallace 
and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer.  Paul Whybrow's Solo and Bob 
Sampson's RS200 were involved in an incident at inlet when Paul stalled 
and Bob had to take swift avoiding action. Unfortunately Bob's bowsprit 
caught Paul's rudder causing Paul to lose a section of shiny rudder and 
Bob to pirouette off into a 720 degree penalty turn!

At the end of the first lap Jane Chadney lost her lead to Neil and Nicky, 
whilst Simon Veal who had started last, was weaving his way up through 
the fleet with David Higgs was also moving up through.  With Neil and 
Nicky established at the front of the fleet the race then settled into a 
pattern similar to the morning one. The Lasers squabbled amongst 
themselves, Bob Sampson and Allison fretted with their spinnaker whilst 
Paul Whybrow used his reduced rudder to good effect.  Jane Chadney 
proved to be the pick of the Laser bunch whilst Jane Anderson rued the 
weather and her choice of Topper. David Harris in the Otter settled for a 
gentle race whilst Mike Ford and John Leveridge in red Wayfarer 101 
started late, sported a lime green repair over patch and couldn't make up 
for lost time.
