AM: Barnwell Cup 6 With the race start only five minutes away, Mary Carter took her Laser back to shore and retired, having deciding that she needed the smaller 4.7 rig. As the start horn sounded David Higgs in his fully rigged Laser got away first, followed by Roger Heasman sailing the Laser 4.7 and Jane Anderson in the Laser Radial. As the boats headed to West Bob Sampson in the RS200 crewed by Stephanie Heasman moved up into third place, with David still in the lead and Jane Anderson second. Jane Chadney was also starting to press forward in her Laser Radial with Simon Veal in his fully rigged Laser making up for a poor start. The leading group soon started to ease out a gap from the following group of boats headed by the Enterprise of Alan Comber and John Weller. John Buckett and Meg Higgs in the Otter and John Savages Solo brought up the rear. At West mark on the second lap David Higgs lost hold of his mainsheet and was catapulted into the water after a spectacular gybe. Having recovered, David seemed to lose confidence, stalling at Inlet and falling back amongst the slower boats. Roger Heasman meanwhile in the small 4.7 Laser rig was managing to hold onto the coat tails of the leading group. Jane Anderson, now in the lead, started to pull well ahead on the reach from Pinkie buoy down to Dam Green on the second lap - much to the ire of Bob and Stephanie in the RS 200 who were flying the spinnaker and working really hard! Jane Chadney was also trying hard to catch Bob and Stephanie, with Simon Veal gradually closing on the Chadney stern. In the second group of boats the Enterprise of Alan and John was having a real tussle with Mike Ford and Izzy Higgs in the Wanderer and John Chandler's Bosun. At Dam buoy, Mike and Izzy managed to get the inside line on Alan and John to put the Wanderer ahead of the Enterprise. Also sailing with a junior crew John Buckett's Otter was struggling for performance but still managing to head John Savage in the Solo. On the last lap Jane Anderson cemented her first place with Bob and Stephanie coming home second and Simon third. Unfortunately for David Higgs having started so well, after his splash, on handicap he ended up second to last. Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 2nd Roger Heasman (Laser 4.7) 3rd Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) 4th Bob Sampson and Stephanie Heasman (RS 200) 5th Simon Veal (Laser) 6th John Chandler (Bosun) 7th John Buckett and Meg Higgs (Otter) 8th Mike Ford and Izzy Higgs (Wanderer) 9th Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise) 10th David Higgs (Laser) 11th John Savage (Solo) PM: Pursuit Race 5 With John Savage starting first in the Solo, as the slowest racer and Jane Anderson last as the fastest in her Laser Radial some thirteen minutes later, a real tortoise and hare pursuit race developed. John Savage was slow out of the starting blocks and John Chandler starting one minute later managed to pass him before they reached the first buoy! Roger Heasman in the Laser 4.7 also managed to overtake John before they reached Far Buoy. Mike Ford then moved into third place in the Wanderer, but was subsequently disqualified for starting a minute too soon. This was a great shame as at the end of the sixty four minute race duration Mike had managed to move up to second. Unfortunately John Savage was also disqualified, having gone the wrong side of the Home One buoy on the second time round the course. As the last boats started Jane Anderson made an immediate impact by passing the Enterprise of John Weller and Alan Comber soon after crossing the start line. Jane then set about an impressive passage of overhauling competitor boats, to finish fourth on the water. Bob Sampson with Mary Carter as crew also managed to move through the fleet to finish fifth with Simon Veal sixth. John Chandler's was the sail of the day, as having started second he was never headed once he got into first place and was well satisfied when the race finish horn went in the sixty fourth minute. Results: 1st John Chandler (Bosun) 2nd Roger Heasman (Laser 4.7) 3rd Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 4th Bob Sampson and Mary Carter (RS200) 5th Simon Veal (Laser) 6th John Weller and Alan Comber (Enterprise) Mike Ford (Wanderer,) John Savage (Solo) dsq
