AM: Sailboat Trophy 2 A lovely sunny day, with almost no wind in the morning saw 15 boats desperately trying to get close to the start line. Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise got a little zephyr of breeze just as the start horn sounded to lead the fleet away. Roger Heasman quickly overhauled the Enterprise in his fully rigged Laser, with Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer and Jane Anderson in her Laser giving chase. A racing incident between Neil, Roger and Jane saw all three boats simultaneously pirouetting as they did their 720 degree penalty turns. By default John Buckett found himself leading the race as he passed West White buoy, only to watch as Jane and the other front boats pass him again, as another puff of breeze momentarily lifted the fleet forwards. Jane Anderson headed the fleet as she rounded Pinkie and then proceeded to take a very creative line to Home 2 which gave her a large lead. The rest of the fleet struggled to get round Pinkie and general banter with some good natured calling for 'water on the mark' could be heard echoing across the millpond. Neil Wallace managed to get back ahead of Roger Heasman and just as the race was shortened to one lap a slight breeze sprang up. This gave John Buckett a much appreciated boost towards the finish line which enabled him to finish first on handicap. John Chandler in his Bosun also moved through well to finish third and David Harris who has only just got back to racing did really well to finish sixth. Simon Veal, Roger Ford and Adam Pollard all retired deciding that a joke is a joke ok, but enough is enough when there is no wind.. Tim Martyn sailing son Fraser's Laser decided to finish early on the wrong side of the line and then realising his mistake promptly tried to take it out on the lakes rowing boats by battering them into submission! Results: 1st John Buckett (Otter) 2nd Jane Anderson (Laser) 3rd John Chandler (Bosun) 4th Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 5th Adeney Pooler (Graduate) 6th David Harris (Otter) 7th Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise) 8th Roger Heasman (Laser) 9th Katie Leveridge (Laser Radial) 10th Emily Veal (Laser Radial) 11th Paul Anderson (Laser) 12th Tim Martyn (Laser 4.7). Simon Veal (Laser), Roger Ford and Val Shillito (Wayfarer), Adam Pollard (Laser Pico) rtd PM: Barnwell Cup 5 A more consistent breeze gentled its way across the lake for the afternoon race. ( Huzzah was heard from all sailors.) Both Neil Wallace and Jane Anderson timed their starts to milli-second precision with the rest of the fleet behind them making a variety of decisions as to where to chase for the best wind. Katherine Muller in her Laser 4.7 chanced a port flyer on a very biased starboard start line and was in a good position on the first beat. Unfortunately for Katherine her diminutive sail was soon overshadowed by that of one of the shed sized Wayfarers! After the first buoy rounding, Neil and Nicky had a commanding lead with Roger Ford and Val Shillito in the other Wayfarer second and Jane Anderson third. Paul, Jane's husband was sailing his brand new Laser for only the second time and from the comments made earlier was steering well clear of Jane, as any boat contact would always be Paul's fault! Katie Leveridge meanwhile, had a rigging failure and having taken a pretty wide approach to the course anyway, ended up having an unscheduled break on the west bank. The run back from Pinkie to Dam Green with the diversions to Home 2, Inlet and Zebra on the way, saw the two Wayfarers heading all four fully rigged Lasers in procession. John Buckett's Otter was managing to stay in good enough contact to be doing well on handicap, as was Mike Ford's Solo, with John eventually stealing a march to head the Solo. Katherine Muller was having a dingdong with Emily Veal who was sailing the larger sailed Laser Radial really well until Emily had a problem with her outhaul. Katherine sailed an outstanding race to finish 4th on handicap. At the end of the second lap Jane Anderson had moved into second place to split the Wayfarers, with Paul Anderson and Roger Ford fighting each other to cross the start line first as they headed into the final lap. Meanwhile further back David Harris with Christine Marshall as crew in the Otter were having a turbulent time with the shifting light winds. The third lap saw Neil and Nicky take line honours with Jane Anderson just squeezing home before Roger Ford and Val Shillito. A final lap squabble between Paul Anderson and Simon Veal allowed Roger Heasman to sneak past them both at Home 2 and hold on until the finish line.
