AM: Tamar Cup 5 With a good turnout of fifteen boats at the start, Stephanie Clark in the Laser radial timed her run to the line perfectly and as the horn sounded was away first. Bob Sampson and Anne Coldwell had been out practising in the RS Vision and this seemed to pay dividends as they overtook Steve Axford’s Laser heading to White West buoy. David Higgs in his recently acquired Laser was also doing very well along with Mike Ford in his Wanderer. As the boats converged on the West buoy Neil Wallace and crew John Leveridge in the Wayfarer got the best line to take the lead. John Weller and Alan Comber were also well up the fleet in the Enterprise doing battle with John Chandler and Megan Higgs in the Bosun, whilst Stephanie Heasman was also going well in the Laser 4.7. At the end of the first lap the front three boats had managed to break loose from the following pack, David Higgs sailing a blinder settled into third place and the RS Vision overtook Stephanie Clark and Roger Heasman battling with each other in the Laser Radials. On the second lap Steve Axford overhauled Neil Wallace going round Zebra in a bold move but it was not to last. Bob and Anne in the Vision determined to distance themselves from Roger and Stephanie got the spinnaker up and started to fly. As usual the Toppers of John and Vicki Duncalf were squabbling with each other and John Buckett in the Otter for handicap honours, whilst Mike Ford was proving that he is becoming a contender in the Wanderer. On the last lap grit and determination paid off for Neill and John as they managed to overtake Steve again pulling away enough to win the race on handicap. Eight excited youngsters took to the water for a two lap first race of the seven race series. Seven of the boats were Laser Picos, whilst Annebelle Rademaker chose to sail the smaller Optimist. When the start horn sounded Emily Veal’s experience of sailing in the adult races showed immediately as she got away first, followed by Joe Hedges. The rest of the fleet took a little longer to get to grips with starting and the fleet spread out with Liselotte Rademaker playing catch-up. On the second lap Daan Rademaker managed to overtake Willemijn Rademaker, whilst Fraser Martyn maintained his fifth position throughout. Megan Higgs finished sixth on the water, but was beaten by Annabelle Rademakeron handicap. Great fun was had by all the youngsters who all sailed really well. Results: 1st Emily Veal 2nd Joe Hedges 3rd Daan Rademaker 4th Willemyn Rademaker 5th Fraser Martyn 6th Annebelle Rademaker 7th Megan Higgs 8th Liselotte Rademaker. PM race: Barnwell Cup 5 With all the boats very close at the start, a starboard tack start along the line by John Duncalf caused immediate drama. John Chandler in the Bosun and Katherine Muller in the Laser 4.7 had to take immediate evasive action and collided. Both agreed to take 720 degree penalty turns and in the process poor John Chandler had to take further avoiding action with a visitors canoe! John Duncalf meanwhile, continued on his starboard start tack and managed to call starboard on at least another three boats. Steve Axford got his usual good start to take the lead in the Laser with Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise close on his heels. As the boats headed from West up to Far on a fast reach David Higgs and Roger Heasman in the Lasers and Mike Ford in the Wanderer were all neck and neck, chasing Alan and John’s Enterprise. A welcome new addition to the fleet was the Gunter rigged green Day Boat of Diane Percy racing for the first time. Diane managed two laps and then retired. Stephanie Heasman also retired having hit one buoy and then missed out another. Vicki and John Duncalf in the Toppers were having a good tussle, until a close encounter with some pedalos meant that John had to suddenly alter cause. In the process he hit Dam Green buoy and the resulting 360 degree penalty turn saw him watch Vicki surge ahead. Steve Axford finished the race with a commanding lead, whilst Roger Heasman just managed to stay ahead of David Higgs for second. Star of the race and the day has to be Mike Ford who finished second on handicap.
