Bude Junior Schools had a Fun Day at the lake and as some club members were involved in giving parents and children sailing tasters, racing numbers were somewhat reduced! AM: Barnwell Cup 7 The small fleet of 6 boats started the race in a moderate breeze heading to the West mark. Having rounded the mark the breeze dropped and made for a long slog up to Far. Jane Anderson led the fleet back to Inlet with Mike Ford and John Savage in hot pursuit. Vicki Duncalf, Adeney Pooler and John Duncalf were at this stage having their own private battle at the back of the fleet. To ensure that racing kept away from the Fun Day, the race was kept to the buoys in the top half of the lake and gusty conditions kept all the sailors on their toes. Adeney especially having to work really hard to keep his Graduate upright. Come the end of the second lap, Jane Anderson in her Laser had increased her lead over Mike and John in the Solos who seemed content to battle with each other. Meanwhile John Duncalf had obviously decided that he was not going to let Vicki ease into retirement from teaching and was determinedly keeping ahead of her. The final lap saw Jane finish at the front of the fleet by almost the length of the Lake with Mike and John still battling and at the finish having to dodge windsurfers, canoes and pedalos! A final flourish from the Toppers saw John and Vicki steaming down side by side from Inlet to Dam with Adeney chasing hard to catch them. John just managed to squeak across the line before Vicki gaining the ultimate reward of coming second on handicap. Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Laser) 2nd John Duncalf (Topper) 3rd Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 4th Mike Ford (Solo) 5th John Savage (Solo) 6th Adeney Pooler (Graduate) PM: Cup Race 4 With Sue Murray sailing a club Topper the afternoon boat numbers increased to seven. Jane Anderson led away the closely grouped boats across the start line. The fleet then quickly strung out and by the time they reached West mark all seven boats were line astern, with the yells of the Fun Day participants left as a distant echo. Having rounded Far with a good lead over Mike Ford, Jane then flew down to inlet. Adeney had already improved on his morning performance having moved into third position in front of John Savage and Sue Murray, making good advantage of some favourable windshifts, was by now leading John and Vicki, as the three Toppers brought up the rear of the fleet. On the second lap Jane increased her lead over Mike with Adeney still holding onto third position. Sue going really well had by now passed John Savage and left John and Vicki to fight it out over last place on the water. With North Devon Coast drizzle drifting across the Lake, it looked as if race end would be a dank and drear affair. However, just as Jane crossed the line to finish first, she was bathed in a golden glow as the sun broke through. A sudden swarm of activity from Fun Day sailors threatened Mike Ford's progress and those following as they came down to the finish. However the skill of the racing helms ensured there were no collisions! Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Laser) 2nd Sue Murray (Topper) 3rd John Duncalf (Topper) 4th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 5th Mike Ford (Solo) 6th Adeney Pooler (Graduate) 7th John Savage (Solo)
