AM: Tamar Cup 6 With no wind the racers struggled to even cross the start line and as Jane Chadney wryly mentioned it was just like 'watching paint dry'! Jane Anderson sailing her Laser, as usual found that little puff of air to lead the way with Jane Chadney also in her fully rigged Laser, on Jane's stern. Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer stalled on the line and took desperate manoeuvres to avoid hitting the Home One start line buoy. David Harris in his Otter made a good start closely followed by Simon Veal's Laser and John Buckett's Otter. Space immediately developed to the rest of the boats with the second group led by the Laser of Katie Leveridge, John Weller and Derek Kerr in the Enterprise, Stephanie Heasmans Laser and Adam Pollard in the Pico. It was a sight for sore eyes to see Rob Eason's red Wayfarer 101 back racing with trustee John Leveridge at the helm for his first ever race, ably tutored by crew Mike Ford. From a very slow start off the line with a sudden wind puff they sped past Adam's Pico and the Enterprise. After bunching at Inlet buoy it looked as if Jane Anderson was leaving the fleet behind, using a little zephyr of additional breeze on the way to West. However, with boats re-emerging into view, Jane Chadney appeared to be catching Jane with Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett also closing. Stephanie Heasman also had a good spell and caught up with the front group of boats. With the ever fickle wind a six lap race had to be shortened to two laps as the paint actually almost dried! Having managed to pass John Buckett and Simon Veal, Stephanie Heasman lost ground again. Katie Leveridge found herself being overtaken by her father, hearing that ominous drumming sound of the big red Wayfarer closing on her stern! Jane Anderson finished first with Jane Chadney second and Neil and Nicky third. John Weller and Derek Kerr in the Enterprise gave up in disgust as did David Harris, which was a shame after his good start. Handicap winner was the smooth sailing gentle John Buckett in his Otter. Results: 1st John Buckett (Otter) 2nd Jane Anderson (Laser) 3rd Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 4th Jane Chadney (Laser) 5th Simon Veal (Laser) 6th Stephanie Heasman (Laser) 7th John Leveridge and Mike Ford (Wayfarer) 8th Katie Leveridge (Laser) 9th Adam Pollard (Pico) Lunchtime: Peter Pocock Achievement Trophy. Eight Picos and an Optomist started the race in almost still conditions With the resultant slow drifting it was a shame for the eager young racers. The commitment to race was epitomised by Joe Hedges who although suffering from glandular fever was determined to start. The race itself was shortened to one lap with race positions constantly changing as individual boats found little patches of wind. Annabelle Rademaker in the Optimist had an amazing race as she battled with the larger Pico's, managing to finish third on the water and first on handicap. The almost total lack of wind meant that there was a lot of bumping and shoving going on and the racers didn't necessarily manage to follow the course accurately. The winds foibles were highlighted by Megan Higgs who started first and finished a frustrating last. It was good to see new member Tom Moulton race for the first time and getting to grips with a Pico. Daan Rademaker crossed the line first, with Emily Veal. Final race honours going to battling Annabelle. Results: 1st Annabelle Rademaker (Optimist) 2nd Daan Rademaker (Pico) 3rd Emily Veal (Pico) 4th Lisselot Rademaker (Pico) 5th Willemina Rademaker (Pico) 6th Joe Hedges (Pico,) 7th Fraser Martyn (Pico) 8th Tom Moulton (Pico) 9th Megan Higgs (Pico) PM race: Black Sunday Bowl. An error in the race programme meant that a one off race for a wooden bowl trophy was run. With the starting horn sequence slightly awry, the boats created a staggered start. Jane Chadney and Jane Anderson in the Lasers taking one tack with Neil and Nicky in the Wayfarer followed by John Buckett's Otter tacking the opposite way! With slightly better wind conditions, the lead three boats got well away, leaving Katie Leveridge in her Laser trying hard to close the gap. Katie's father John with Mike Ford again advising as crew, seemed to cement their sailing credentials as they moved through the fleet. However after the race finished it was a different story, as on return to the pontoon both thought the other had tied the boat up. The net result, was the sight of John Leveridge drifting back out onto the lake with Mike shouting instructions from the pontoon on how to sail single handed! Although Jane Anderson finished the race first, final honours on handicap went to Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer. Jane Chadney finished a very close third, thoroughly enjoying her days sailing. Results: 1st Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 2nd Jane Anderson (Laser) 3rd Jane Chadney (Laser) 4th John Buckett (Otter) 5th Katie Leveridge (Laser) 6th John Leveridge and Mike Ford (Wayfarer) 7th Roger Heasman (Laser) 8th Mary Carter (Laser) 9th John Weller and Derek Kerr (Enterprise)
