AM: Sailboat 2 The biggest fleet of the year set off in rather grey conditions last Sunday. John Duncalf (Topper) was first away closely followed by Roger Heasman (Streaker). However, Bob Sampson in his RS200 with crew James Pollard were in overtaking mode as they flew their spinnaker. As the race progressed the boats spread out led by Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) with Jane Chadney (Laser R), Paul Whybrow (Solo) and Bob in hot pursuit! This leading group were closely followed by Adeney Pooler in his Graduate (who looked extremely comfortable and very much in control), and with Nicky Buckett out for the first time this year in her Laser Radial. At the back of the fleet the boats with the higher Portsmouth Yardstick numbers were also battling against each other using sailing tactics where appropriate. Toby Tobias with new member Leno in their Bosun were enjoying a tussle with John Chandler and Alan Comber also in a Bosun, and John Savage in his Solo. Results: 1. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 2. Roger Heasman (Streaker) 3. Paul Whybrow (Solo) 4. Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) 5. Adeney Pooler (Graduate) 6. Bob Sampson and James Pollard (RS200) 7. John Duncalf (Topper) 8. Nicky Buckett (Laser Radial) 9. Toby Tobias and Leno Pasquale (Bosun) 10 John Chandler and Alan Comber (Bosun) 11. Simon Veal and Declan (Enterprise) 12. John Savage (Solo) 13 David Harris (Otter) John Buckett (Otter) rtd (gear failure) PM: Pursuit Race 2 This is a staggered start race with David Harris being the first boat to cross the start line and the last boat 15 minutes later was Bob Sampson and James Pollard. All other boats went off at various times in between! Light winds of force 1-2 made rounding the first 2 marks quite difficult due to wind shifts and gusts by the dam. This was the first time this year that we have used the Far Marks and this caused some confusion as some competitors were not sure which was the Cornish bank mark and which was the Devon bank mark!! John Buckett was leading after the first lap, with John Savage 2nd and Paul Whybrow 3rd. The race time was 64 minutes and due to the light winds some members said it was a long race! Toby Tobias had new member Leno as crew as did Bob Sampson with young James Pollard as crew. Results: 1. Paul Whybrow (Solo) 2. Roger Heasman (Streaker) 3. Adeney Pooler (Graduate) 4. Sue Murray (Topper Topaz) 5. John Buckett (Otter) 6. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 7. Bob Sampson and James Pollard (RS200) 8. John Savage (Solo) 9. Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) 10. Toby Tobias and Leno Pasquale (Bosun) 11. John Chandler and Alan Comber (Bosun) 12. Simon Veal (Laser) 13. Nicky Buckett (Laser Radial) 14. Vicki Duncalf (Laser Radial) 15. David Harris (Otter) Many thanks to Vicki Duncalf for standing in as OOD, to John Duncalf for sorting out the Pursuit calculations, and to both John and Vicki for writing these reports.
