AM:  Commodore's Cup 2
 
With a northerly force 2-3 wind blowing steadily down the lake, 10 boats set out and all the 
helms and crews were well wrapped up except Steve Axford in his Laser who was almost in 
shorts and a T-shirt with suntan lotion on!  First away was Roger Heasman in his Streaker 
Wave, but false starts by Vicki Duncalf (Topper) and Bob Sampson (RS200) forced them to 
return to behind the line for a re-start.  It was a hard and cold beat to Inlet mark with Steve 
Axford leading all the way round the first lap, closely followed by Jane Chadney (Laser 4.7), 
then Bob and James in the RS.  At the end of lap 2 Steve still remained in control, but Bob 
had overtaken Jane Chadney.  Due to the very cold wind the Race Officer shortened the 
course to 3 laps which gave Steve line honours, Bob and James 2nd and Jane Chadney 3rd.

After a rather quick picnic lunch as it was so cold outside despite the sun, sailors noticed that 
the wind had freshened to a force 4!  After a capsize or two before the race had even started, 
the race set off in a huge squall with Bob and James having an excellent start and leading the 
pack.  Steve Axford eventually overtook them, but then capsized in a nasty gust on his way 
from Inlet mark to West mark, but he soon righted and continued on his way.  Adam Hilton in 
his Solo retired wet and cold with a tiller breakage.  So also did John Buckett, John Savage, 
and Nicky Buckett as the wind shrieked through the rigging.  The RS 200 capsized on lap 3 
on the same leg as Steve had done, righted and still kept going, then Vicki capsized at the top 
of the lake which sadly lost her several minutes as she struggled to right her boat in the cold 
and wind.  By the time the race had finished the sun had come out and the wind moderated!!
