AM: Cup Race 1 After two weeks of lost racing due to high winds and a social cycle ride on Saturday that turned into a walk in the wind and rainy gloom, brilliant sunshine on Sunday lifted racers spirits no end. Despite the clocks going forward, nearly everyone made it to the line in time, even allowing for the precious extra seconds it took to write down all the details of a complex and involved course! Simon Veal got an almost perfect start and headed to the West buoy with Jane Anderson dogging his heels. John Chandler also got an excellent start and got to West with Jane Chadney and Roger Heasman close on his heels. From West the fleet started to spread out and the relative boat performances started to come into play with Vicki Duncalf and Emily Veal going really well in the Toppers. Jane managed to overtake Simon even though she was only able to sail with half rudder, when Simon had to tack approaching Zebra! Derek Farnfield was flying the flag for the Wanderers and going well until he had to undertake 360 degree penalty turns when negotiating the Zebra and Home 1 buoys. Although passed, Simon did not lose contact with Jane Anderson in the lead, but Jane Chadney was starting to close down on him in turn. Simon however, gave his best performance to-date to finish second on the water and John Chandler certainly showed the flag for the Bosuns. On handicap the whole race was very closely fought with Jane first, Vicki second and John Chandler third. Simon Veal just held on to fourth place on handicap, with Jane Chadney a mere two seconds further back in fifth. John Savage and John Buckett also punched above their handicap. Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 2nd Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 3rd John Chandler (Bosun) 4th Simon Veal (Laser) 5th Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) 6th John Buckett (Otter) 7th Roger Heasman (Laser) 8th John Savage (Cadet) 9th Emily Veal (Topper) 10th Stephanie Heasman (Laser Radial) 11th Derek Farnfield (Wanderer) PM: Equinoctial 6. Fifteen boats pushed to the line creating a hectic start with Paul Whybrow and Steve Axford in the Scorpion and Roger Heasman in the Laser Radial forced to re-start. Jane Anderson had to do a 720 penalty turn just after the start, having tried to punt Bob Sampson out of the way in crossing the line. Both Jane Anderson and Paul Whybrow recovered well to fight for second and third positions, whilst David Harker in the RS Feva (having his first season’s race), sailed brilliantly to take joint third on handicap. Jane Chadney also had a good race to finish fifth and in the process reversing the morning’s positions with John Chandler. Mike Ford’s decision to neglect the Bosun in favour of a Wanderer presently looks suspect, as both he and Derek Farnfield in his Wanderer supported the back of the fleet. Father Simon and daughter Emily Veal both also sailed solidly and are forces to be reckoned with this season. Results: 1st Bob Sampson (Laser) 2nd Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 3rd= Paul Whybrow/Steve Axford (Scorpion) 3rd= David Harker (RS Feva) 5th Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) 6th John Chandler (Bosun) 7th Simon Veal (Laser) 8th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 9th Stephanie Clark (Laser 4.7) 10th John Buckett (Otter) 11th Emily Veal (Topper) 12th Roger Heasman (Laser Radial) 13th John Savage (Cadet) 14th Mike Ford (Wanderer) 15th Derek Farnfield (Wanderer)
