AM: Sailboat Trophy 3 In light, fickle winds seven boats started the race but unfortunately Commodore Simon Veal was over the start line at 12 noon and had to return. However, Jane Chadney in her full sailed Laser, John Buckett (Otter) and Stuart Mealing (Laser) all had excellent starts. In the light wind the boats soon spread out with Jane establishing a commanding lead, followed by Sue Murray in her Topper Trez (the gib flying today which was a real advantage) then Stuart was in third position just ahead of Simon Veal (Bosun) and John Buckett. Unfortunately, half way through the race the heavens opened and there was a heavy rainstorm; the rain seemed to "kill" what wind there was and it was decided to shorten the course to two laps, to the approval of the soggy sailors! The results on handicap of the seven were virtually as they crossed the line with John Duncalf, in his smaller sailed Topper, struggling to find both the wind and his usual good humour! Results: 1. Jane Chadney (Laser) 2. Sue Murray (Topper Trez) 3. Stuart Mealing (Laser) 4. John Buckett (Otter) 5. Simon Veal (Bosun) 6. John Savage (Solo) 7. John Duncalf (Topper) PM: Barnwell Cup 1 This was a replacement race for the first Barnwell Cup race which was blown out in March. At the start of the race the wind had decreased even more and the start was extremely difficult; in fact so challenging that two boats decided to call it a day after a ten minute battle to even cross the line! John Buckett (one of our light wind specialists!) even found it difficult to start on the correct "port" side of the start line but finally managed it and then "motored" up to middle buoy where the wind dropped again. It was a very slow, frustrating race which had to be shortened (unusually) from three laps to only one. The four remaining boats were all relatively close together making it a tad more exciting for them. Paul Whybrow (Solo) led the boats back from Pinkie buoy with Sue Murray following, but when we next saw them after the west mark, Sue Murray was now well ahead of Paul followed by Jane Chadney and then John. This meant a well deserved win for Sue who has rocketed through the rankings over recent weeks. Results: 1. Sue Murray (Topper Trez) 2. Paul Whybrow (Solo) 3. John Buckett (Otter) 4. Jane Chadney (Laser) Thanks to Vicki Duncalf and James Pollard for doing Officer of the day duties and for writing this report.
