AM: Tamar Memorial Trophy 3 The lake appeared remarkably different this week compared to the preceding weeks of the season. The wind was howling out of the north, straight down the length of the lake. For all its bluster it was an even strength with few of the killer down-drafts that can have half the fleet carrying out impromptu capsize drills at regular intervals around the course. John Duncalf got a good start in his Topper, quickly followed by Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer. Neil took the lead from John before the windward mark, followed by David Higgs in a Laser. Neil completed his first lap in 15 minutes with David 30 seconds behind, Mike Ford following closely in his Solo. The conditions proved splendid for the aquaplaining hulls of the Toppers, Laser and Solo, but try as they might they couldn’t better Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett on the lake. Neil crossed the line first, having completed three laps, in under 50 minutes. Unfortunately the conditions didn’t prove as splendid for Adeney Pooler in his Graduate who looked decidedly damp at the lunch break. The fleet took to the water for the staggered start but Adeney Pooler had even less luck for the afternoon than he did in the morning and had to retire with a snapped rudder downhaul before his race had even started. The Toppers of Jane Anderson, John and Vicky Duncalf were the first to start and took a commanding lead over the rest of the fleet. John Savage set off in his Solo followed 7 minutes later by Emily Veal in her Laser 4.7. Emily was racing well but was quickly overtaken by Simon Veal and David Higgs in their respective Laser full rigs. Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett also overtook John Weller and Alan Comber in their Enterprise during the first lap. As the pursuit wore on, the Toppers had a fine tussle with some wonderful tactical racing at mark roundings. Simon Veal managed to wrap his mainsheet around his transom during a gybe, causing him no end of problems, which allowed David Higgs to race passed him. Simon didn’t have much joy after he recovered as he sailed the wrong side of a mark and had to return to round it correctly giving Emily her chance to beat her dad!
