AM: Icicle Series 7 With a beautifully mild autumn day before us and a gentle south-westerly breeze blowing, 8 boats took to the water for the morning race. Both Toby Tobias (Bosun) and John Buckett (Otter) were a little over keen at the start and had to do some nifty work to avoid a recall and both quickly tacked back down the fleet to approach the line again. This left Roger Heasman (Streaker) to literally streak away in to the lead which he managed to hold on to for the full race! As the rest of the fleet followed to the first mark (Inlet), there was quite a bit of jostling for position to qualify for 'room at the mark', other boats having to give way to let those inside room to pass through and onward to the next mark at West! So it was Jane Anderson (Topper) and John Buckett who managed to sneak through making the birds rise from the lake only to settle again as the fleet moved onward to Pinky mark. As the boats came down the lake to both Dam marks, those on the shore wished they had had cameras with them as the colourful sails and hulls in the sunshine were lit up against the grey water of the lake! A puff of wind at the back of the fleet bulked up the boats as they approached Dam Green making everyone fight yet again for the best rounding position before starting Lap 2. Roger had by then disappeared in to the distance, only to be seen again at lunch time when he was caught finishing off his sandwiches! Jane had lost ground as she'd missed out on the puff of wind at dam so was back in the mid fleet again. John Savage (Solo) took this opportunity to have a swim and was helped ashore by our able safety boat crew, Bob Sampson and Stephanie Heasman! The next 2 laps proved uneventful except that Christine Marshall had a great time helming her first race in a Bosun, ably instructed by crew Simon Veal, and she did extremely well, so well done Christine! Results: 1. Roger Heasman (Streaker) 2. Jane Anderson (Topper) 3. John Buckett (Otter) 4. Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 5. Toby Tobias and James Pollard (Bosun) 6. Christine Marshall and Simon Veal (Bosun) 7. Adam Hilton (420) John Savage retired to dry off! PM: Frostbite Series 6. After a fantastic picnic outside the race box, the second race began with John Buckett, Roger Heasman and Simon Veal all having excellent starts. John lead the way to Inlet and an orderly line followed. Battle between the 2 Toppers of Vicki and Jane left Vicki just losing out before the buoy rounding having been ahead from the start. The afternoon race took the fleet all the way up to Far mark where there was more wind and a lovely beat back to the Dam marks again. Paul Whybrow had wrestled the lead from John and Roger and like the morning race he maintained his position to the end. Simon lost his hat on the way round and the rescue boat was deployed to find it, but sadly it had dived below the water into the murky depths before they could reach it!! With the fleet still close together, it was upwind tactics which would sort the fleet out as they came down the lake for lap 2 with John Buckett and Simon contesting for third position with Roger not far ahead of them. Meanwhile, James Pollard with Toby as crew was helming the Bosun for the afternoon race in his distinctive standing position (not really to be recommended for racing), was trying hard further back! Fleet positions didn't change for the 3rd lap so the results were:- Results: 1. Paul Whybrow (Solo) 2. Jane Anderson (Topper) 3. John Buckett (Otter) 4. Roger Heasman (Streaker) 5. Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 6. Simon Veal (Bosun) 7. James Pollard & Toby Tobias (Bosun) 8. John Savage (Solo). Many thanks to both Mary and Mick Carter who manned the Race Box all day and wrote both reports, and to Bob and Stephanie as Safety Boat crew for managing to save John, but sadly having a hat fatality!! Last races of the season next week!!
