AM Pursuit Race 6 Another Sunday of racing but this one started with a noticeable difference, the big orange ball in the sky made an uncharacteristic appearance! Unfortunately the fair weather meant that the day was dogged with poor, shifting winds. These started the day blowing in from the South at around 7 miles per hour. The Pursuit race series features a staggered start with start times worked out according to boat type and previous race positions. In this particular race, the start time of the first boat was 16 minutes ahead of the last boat to start. Mike Ford had the honour of starting first on this occasion. Alan Comber was convinced to start on the wrong side of the starting marker buoy by his crew but quickly realised his error and put things right. Vicki Duncalf had a later start time than she was used to as she was sailing her newly-acquired laser. Jane Anderson had the misfortune of starting 16 minutes after the first boat. The 65-minute race wore on with racers working hard to maintain or better their positions. Notably, Bob Sampson and crew had a fantastic race in the RS200, making up close to 11 minutes, to finish second to Mike Ford, who had managed to hold his lead from the start. Results: 1st Mike Ford (Solo) 2nd Bob Sampson & crew (RS200) 3rd Alan Comber & John Weller (Enterprise) 4th Sue Murray & crew (Topper Topaz) 5th John Chandler (Bosun) 6th Katie Leveridge (Laser Radial) 7th Vicki Duncalf (Laser Radial) 8th David Harris (Otter) 9th Adeney Pooler (Graduate) 10th John Duncalf (Topper) 11th Jane Anderson (Laser) 12th Megan Higgs (Topper) 13th Emily Veal (Laser 4.7) 14th David Higgs (Laser) 15th Jorg Gawrisch (Otter) 16th Adam Pollard (Pico) Lunchtime: Peter Pocock Novice Series. Five boats took to the water for the afternoon's Peter Pocock Novice race. Annabelle Rademaker had her Father as crew, whilst Joe Hedges and Daan Rademaker decided to try their luck together. Megan Higgs got the best start and sailed well to maintain the lead position throughout the race. Joe and Daan had an awful race, finding themselves constantly "in irons". Willemyn and Liselotte Rademaker got a good start and, along with Annabelle, were soon chasing Megan around the course. All the racers did very well in poor wind conditions. 1st Megan Higgs 2nd Willemyn Rademaker 3rd Liselotte Rademaker 4th Annabelle Rademaker Joe Hedges & Daan Rademaker rtd PM: Sailboat Trophy 7 The wind speed managed to maintain 7 miles per hour from the South East for the start of the afternoon race. Leader honours were hotly contested with Katie Leveridge just over the line at the start meaning a 360 degree penalty. The fleet rounded the first mark in close proximity, too close for Vicki Duncalf who, getting used to the length of her new Laser, gently collided with another boat at the mark leading to a 720 degree penalty. The fleet started to stretch out around the lake with Jane Anderson leading Paul Whybrow in close second. Katie Leveridge found a good gust of wind and made up ground after her earlier pirouette. Into the second lap the wind died away to almost nothing as an opposing sea breeze worked against the weak gradient wind from the South. Sailors found themselves becalmed and waiting for the odd gust to make up ground on their opponents. Just such a gust saw five boats racing down the lake, neck and neck, trying to make the most of the momentary blow and giving the Race Officer a shock as they all converged on the finish line at the same time. Winners honours went to Jane Anderson on the lake, but Paul Whybrow managed to overhaul her on countback under handicap.
