Tamar Memorial Trophy 8 Another sunny Sunday on the Upper Tamar Lake, with a fleet of seventeen boats prepared to race. The helmsmen and women were so fired up that several boats were over the start line at the gun leading to a general recall. All the boats got away on the restart and stretched out on the beat toward the west mark. Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett made the most of the light breeze and led the way to far buoy. Bob Sampson and Liz Royal were working hard in the RS200, with Jane Anderson and Jane Chadney giving chase. Emily Veal caught a gust and managed to overhaul her dad but couldn't hold her advantage as the race wore on. Adeney Pooler had a particularly good race, moving steadily up the ranks as the race progressed, as did Vicky Duncalf, getting to grips with her Laser. The wind had dropped substantially by the time the third lap started and this meant that the last boat over the line at the finish had been racing for close to two hours. Alan Tobias had clearly had enough as he gave up on sail power and broke out his paddle to get back to the pontoon in time for lunch. The wind had freshened considerably, aided by the sea breeze that generally blows in from the Atlantic on sunny afternoons. Positions on the start line were being hard fought for again, resulting in boats over the line at the start and another general recall. The second start got away perfectly, with the notable exception of Paul Whybrow who capsized just after crossing the line. There was a minor course change from the morning race; the Northerly point was now Pinkie, not Far buoy. Unusually, Simon Veal found himself in the lead at Pinkie, which he managed to maintain until overhauled by Neil Wallace & Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer. A minor error at Dam Green buoy cost him dearly and he dropped a further two places as the leaders went into the second lap. Neil and Nicky made it a double by claiming another first place on handicap, whilst John Buckett managed a second place on handicap, despite only being 10th crossing the line.
