AM: Tamar Memorial Trophy 7 Twenty one boats contested the race making it necessary to use start line 2 to accommodate them all. A seemingly innocuous force two south west westerly changed at race start with the wind was coming across the lake in squalling vicious gusts and with instant direction changes! Fraser Martyn was the first casualty capsizing his Laser before race start with Mary Carter in her Laser getting away very late. Jane Anderson’s Radial Laser led the main fleet away, closely followed by Bob Sampson and Christine Marshall in the RS200, Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett in the Wayfarer and David Higgs in the fully rigged Laser. It didn’t take long for the race leadership to change as uncharacteristically Jane Anderson went the wrong side of the first buoy. David Higgs then hit the buoy and had to do a 360 degree penalty turn. Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise tiptoed up when nobody was looking to sit in second place as the boats rounded Dam Green. (Unfortunately for Alan and John a number of subsequent penalties gradually pushed them down the fleet.) Simon Veal soon established himself in third place in his fully rigged Laser with daughter Emily in the smallest rigged Laser 4.7 not far behind in fifth and sailing magnificently. With all the boats heading up to Pinkie on a reach, there were nine boats almost in a row with a contingent of five Toppers amongst them. Toby Tobias had soon seen enough of the vicious wind and decided to call it a day. Over the course of the three laps Toby was followed into retirement by a further four boats. (Derek Farnfield also retired but was subsequently disqualified for missing a buoy!) After their great start Bob and Christine in the RS200 capsized twice which spoilt all their previous good work. Jane Anderson meantime showing her fighting mettle clawed her way back to third whilst Jane Chadney in her Laser 4.7 managed to pass Emily Veal for fourth. John Duncalf turned out to be top in a Topper, whilst Sue Murray, racing one for only the second time, managed to split the Duncalf family. Megan Higgs and Joe Hedges also in Toppers did really well to finish their two laps as juniors with Megan just shading Joe to the line. Come the end of the third lap, Neil and Nicky had established a major lead with Simon Veal second and Jane Anderson close by in third. Results: 1st Neil Wallace and Nicky Buckett (Wayfarer) 2nd Jane Chadney (Laser 4.7) 3rd John Duncalf (Topper) 4th Emily Veal (Laser 4.7) 5th Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) 6th Sue Murray (Topper) 7th Simon Veal (Laser) 8th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 9th Bob Sampson and Christine Marshall (RS200) 10th Paul Anderson (Laser) 11th David Higgs (Laser) 12th Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise) 13th Megan Higgs (Topper) 14th Joe Hedges (Topper) Toby Tobias (Bosun), John Leveridge and John Buckett (Wayfarer), Adeney Pooler (Graduate), Mary Carter (Laser Radial), Hugh Norris (Mirror) and Fraser Martyn (Laser 4.7) rtd Derek Farnfield (Streaker) dsq. Lunchtime: Peter Pocock, race abandoned. PM: Sailboat Trophy 6 Owing to the taxing weather conditions a well reduced fleet started the afternoon race. Starters were quickly depleted further as Alan Comber and John Weller in the Enterprise decided that discretion was the better part of valour! Adeney Pooler obviously decided that crew David Harris needed a wash, dunking the both of them before the five minute horn had even sounded! Bob Sampson with heavyweight crew David Higgs got the RS200 first across the start line closely followed by Jane Anderson now sailing her Laser with the smallest 4.7 sail. Jane then managed to get a starboard call on Bob at the windward Dam Green buoy to snatch the winning position. Roger Heasman and Fraser Martyn sailing two up in a Laser Radial failed to get tacking tactics sorted for Dam Green and capsized, then watching helpless as the rest of the fleet sail off into the distance. The Toppers, having been reduced down to John and Vicki Duncalf were in their element with the gusty conditions and with John finally showing Vicki how it should be done! Toby decided that ballast was the name of the game with John Buckett and Megan Higgs crewing in his Bosun and thoroughly enjoying themselves. John Savage sailing the Solo seemed happy to sit on the tail of the Bosun and follow it home. Jane Chadney and Emily Veal both acquitted themselves admirably in their Laser 4.7’s, whilst Simon Veal battled hard in his fully rigged Laser to bring it across the line in third. Racing his Otter for only the second time with his daughter as crew, Jorg Gawsrisch did exceptionally well as the Otter is not an easy boat to handle in gusty conditions. Results: 1st Jane Anderson (Laser 4.7) 2nd Jane Chadney (Laser 4.7) 3rd Emily Veal (Laser 4.7) 4th Bob Sampson and David Higgs (RS200) 5th John Duncalf (Topper) 6th Vicki Duncalf (Topper) 7th Simon Veal (Laser) 8th Toby Tobias, John Buckett and Megan Higgs (Bosun) 9th John Savage (Solo) 10th Adeney Pooler and David Harris (Graduate) 11th Jorgan Gawsrisch (Otter) Roger Heasman and Fraser Martyn (Laser Radial), Alan Comber and John Weller (Enterprise).
