AM: Sailboat trophy 6 Vicki Duncalf in her Topper was first over the start line, with Bob Sampson crewed by Simon Veal in the RS 200 right on her tail, closely followed by Jane Anderson sailing the Laser 4.7. With boats choosing to tack at all different points up the lake the fleet quickly spread out. John Savage managed to ride a severe gust and all of the boats were dancing to the tune of the wind. Bob and Simon reached Far well in the lead and having rounded the mark soon set the spinnaker. Jane Chadney as timekeeper had to quickly venture to the end of the pontoon to ensure that all the boats negotiated the red Inlet buoy which was hidden from clubhouse view. David Higgs sailing on a full Laser rig managed to get past Jane Anderson coming from Far to Inlet and their duel gave Bob an even more commanding lead. Stephanie Clark in her Laser 4.7 was nibbling away at Mike Ford in the Wanderer, managing to force him into an error at Dam Green, thereby overtaking him. Derek Farnfield in his Wanderer was having rigging trouble, struggling to release his jib. On the second lap he got into trouble at Dam Green buoy, letting John Duncalf in the Topper through. Derek then ran aground and was disqualified, having had an assist from the safety boat. On the third and final lap, Bob and Simon had a really comfortable lead, with David Higgs now well clear of Jane Anderson. A ding-dong all round the last lap between Stephanie Clark and Roger Heasman went right to the line, with Roger just losing out on the line. This was Bob's best ever race in the RS200 to date, as he managed to finish second on handicap to Jane Anderson. With the wind starting to gust, all the youngsters raced under reefed conditions for safety. Annabelle Rademaker in the Optimist had a rigging failure just before race start, never quite managing to cross the line before she retired. Emily Veal was away first and sailed the two laps with aplomb, to win. Fraser Martyn also sailed comfortably to finish second, whilst a battle between Megan Higgs and Daan Rademaker was settled in Megans favour, as Daan capsized just before the finish line. Willemina and Lisselot Rademaker finished fifth and sixth, whilst Tom Moulton had to retire with rig failure. Unfortunately for John Weller and Alan Comber the Enterprise got a big gust, capsized and left them bailing into an early retirement! At the first West mark the Scorpion was already well ahead and just continued to disappear into the distance for the whole race, spinnaker up and boat flying! According to assistant OOD Mary Carter, the rest of the fleet looked like evenly spaced ducklings, trying to catch up to mother! David Higgs, mastering his fully rigged Laser well, managed to be first duckling in line, closely followed by Jane Anderson and Jane Chadney in Laser 4.7's and then Simon Veal in his fully rigged Laser and Stephanie Clark in her Laser 4.7. As the race progressed the Laser group managed to pull away from Mike Ford in his Wanderer, who was being closely followed by a resurgent John Savage in the Solo, with Vicki and John Duncalf in the Toppers keeping well in contact. The third lap saw a contentious windward boat call between Jane Anderson and Simon Veal at Inlet, resulting in a meeting of boats and then a buoy collision. Simon Veal then fumed into sequential 720 and subs 360 penalty turns!
