31st March 2019 Race Report

Barnwell 7

Dramatically Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert, in the Club’s Bosun, were dismasted in the moments before the start, leaving four boats to scramble across the start line at much the same moment. The winds being south-easterly they started towards the Tamar Lake dam with Nathan Pollard’s Laser having the acceleration to pull ahead and round Dam Green in the lead. He stayed ahead racelong, lapping Vicki Duncalf’s Topper and finishing some ten minutes in front of anyone else. Jane Anderson, reduced to a Topper by the strength of the gusty winds, nonetheless took the first buoy in second place and shot ahead of the Bosun helmed by Adam Hilton and crewed by Paul Petvin and Tom McKee. The Bosun’s battle was with Vicki Duncalf whom it balked at various buoys before getting legitimately ahead on lap 3 (of 5). Applying this year’s handicaps changed winners into losers.

  3. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)
  4. Adam Hilton, Tom McKee and Paul Petvin (Bosun)

The Pollard/Gilbert Bosun now had a mast but it was last over the start line. This turned out to be an advantage because it had time to avoid the fast starting Laser of Nathan Pollard which capsized at Dam Green causing the Hilton/Petvin/McKee Bosun to lose time avoiding it. Vicki Duncalf therefore began the long run up the lake in the lead; however Nathan Pollard soon caught her up and was never again headed. Brian Pollard overtook the Duncalf Topper which continued its earlier scrap with the slower Bosun which never got far enough ahead to overcome its handicap disadvantage.

Grateful thanks were given to Vicky Herbert and Sally Wills who ran the races, to Bob Sampson and Roger Heasman for safety boat duties and to Mandy Pollard for photographs.

14th October 2018 race report

Frostbite 3

The morning had been wet and blustery but at noon, as the first race started, the sun came out and the gusts toned down, making for a very nice day’s racing. The winds were from points north of east so the nearest thing to a beating start that James Pollard, race officer on the day, could design was a Home 2 startline aimed at Dam Green, where the usual push and shove took place as fourteen boats tried to go round at much the same moment. Nathan Pollard emerged in the lead on the reach to Zebra and the beat to Inlet. He was closely followed by Bob Sampson in the other full-sailed Laser in the day’s fleet. These two dominated the front of the race and stayed in the lead even when the handicaps were applied. A trio of Laser Radials came along next – Sue Murray’s, Linda Spiller’s and Penny Abbott’s – but between and around them, and having a fine race, was the Enterprise of Alan Comber and John Weller. There were four Bosuns sailing of which Roger Heasman’s (Sally Wills crewing) was the consistent leader, gaining third place after handicapping. And there were two Toppers, Vicki Duncalf’s and Jane Anderson’s, somewhat tangled up in Bosuns, and the familiar yellow-hulled Solo twins of Geoff Floyd and Adam Hilton.

The difference in Topper results between the morning and the afternoon is interesting. It was a bit windier in the afternoon. The morning race (Frostbite 3) was 3 laps and the afternoon race (Icicle 3) was 4 laps.

Icicle 3

There were additions to the morning’s fast starters; it was probably Vicki Duncalf first over the line with Jane Chadney (now helming the Commodore’s Bosun with John Dabbs crewing) and Adam Hilton not far behind. But Bob Sampson got round Dam Green first with Nathan Pollard second and they again dominated the race although in the reverse order from the morning. However for a while Nathan fell back to third; it was crucial, in both races, to get between Zebra and Inlet in one tack. If the boat (or it’s helm) couldn’t point high enough places were liable to be lost. This may have been what happened to Nathan’s Laser; in any event he had to overtake the Hilton Solo later in Lap 1. The Laser Radials had their usual ding dong, with Penny Abbott the eventual winner over Sue Murray and Linda Spiller salvaging sixth place on the water after a series of mishaps. Alan Comber’s Enterprise again led the double-handers for much of the race with Jane Chadney in the leading Bosun behind it until the two boats collided at Middle, Jane emerging from penalty turns in front. At the end Adam Hilton’s Solo was only a minute and a half behind Bob Sampson’s leading Laser, little enough for the handicap to give the victory to the Solo.

15th July race report

Commodore 5

More sun and more wind, enough to cause a couple of capsizes. Jane Anderson was caught by a gust shortly after rounding West and James Pollard succumbed as he approached Inlet. Jane Chadney (Laser Full) led the first couple of laps before being swallowed up by Steve Axford and Bob Sampson. The battling Solos of Paul Whybrow and Adam Hilton with the similarly paced Streaker of Robin Spiller all followed the Laser race with Paul making an excellent start and leading the trio until Adam and, for a while, Robin overtook him. He got his revenge on the last lap when Adam hit Dam Green and the resultant penalty turn put him just behind Paul on the finish line with Robin another three seconds back. Nicky Buckett and Linda Spiller in the Bosun were the first of the double-handers.

Pursuit 5

John Savage in his Otter was first to start but couldn’t fight off his pursuers. Vicki Duncalf (Topper) started four minutes later and held off everyone but Roger Heasman with Sally Wills in the Bosun who had started five minutes after her. Steve Axford had the best start in that he crossed the line less than a second after his appointed time. He made good use of it getting up from fourteenth to fifth. James Pollard was the last to start in his Blaze, an exotic beast the width of a king-sized bed with tubular extensions that make it even wider. He’d been lapped before he even started and could only make up a place or two. Four boats started on the same time; the Solos of Paul Whybrow and Adam Hilton, the Streaker of Robin Spiller which has a similar handicap, and the Radial of Jane Chadney. Paul led away but  Jane did best, getting up to third.
