20th September 2020 Race Report

Frostbite 1

Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) and Vicki Duncalf (Topper) were the leaders at the start. Adam Hilton (Solo) had crossed the line before them but he had anticipated the starting signal and had to duck back. The winds were easterly, reasonably consistent and quite strong enough to have sailors sitting comfortably on the gunwale. John Dabbs was doubtful about sailing his Bosun single-handed and was having rigging problems so he joined Colin and Louise Witchel in their Bosun. The sun shone more and more of the time as the day went on.

Paul Anderson (Officer of the Day) had designed a course which went no further north than Middle in order not to further aggravate the fishermen on the Cornwall bank who had already complained about the gig boats that rowed past them. The course made up for this loss by zig-zagging across the middle of the Lake in a manner too complex for the Commodore to follow. He retired. Jane Anderson completed four ten minute laps in the lead.

The winds continued pleasant, the sun warm; perfect sailing weather. Anderson, Hilton and Duncalf crossed the line very close together. The Solo was perhaps a touch ahead and got round Dam Green in the lead. The Anderson Laser had taken over by the time they reached Zebra and remained ahead. Vicki Duncalf’s Topper held third place on the water and the Dabbs Bosun fourth. The handicaps promoted the Topper to second by one second!

13th September 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Sunday Race 17

Eleven boats crossed the start line and made for Dam Green in warm sunshine and southerly winds that varied between faint and gentle. Of a bunch that included the Laser Radials of Sue Murray and Jane Anderson, the full-sailed Laser of Bob Sampson and the Solo of Adam Hilton, it was probably Jane Anderson who had started first; certainly it was she who rounded Dam Green first, free of the melee that followed. Adam Hilton emerged in second place on the run to Middle with Robin Spiller, who could possibly have demanded water from the Solo at the buoy, close behind and Bob Sampson rapidly making up ground. John Dabbs sailing alone in his Bosun and Graham Joyce (Laser Full) were the major gainers on the beat to West, the Bosun rounding the buoy second behind Jane Anderson. Bob Sampson made the bigger sail on his Laser pay dividends on the beat all the way back from Pinky to Dam Green and he led the fleet at the end of laps one two and three. Jane Anderson was consistently second but behind them places continued to be swapped; Robin Spiller, for example, was seventh at the end of lap one but fourth at the end of lap two and sixth at the end of the race. Applying the handicaps made major changes to the results.

The winds were light and changeable in much the same way as for the first race. Most competitors took a very similar time to complete three laps; Geoff Floyd taking a mere six seconds more in the second race! Penny Abbott (Laser Full) grabbed the lead through an ace tack that took her straight from around West to Dam Green, only to lose it again on the next lap by capsizing on the way to Pinky. Jane Anderson was the next of the Laser sailors with Bob Sampson taking time to assert himself but leading from the second lap onwards. Sue Murray, Adam Hilton and Robin Spiller swapped places once or twice and John Dabbs was again well up the fleet in his Bosun.

Wednesday 9th September 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Wednesday Race 6

It drizzled or it rained on the way to the Lake. For some there was fog. It wasn’t much better on arrival at the Lake; still very damp and with a wind considerably more powerful than forecast. Still five boats took to the water. Leila Farmer launched her Hartley for her first race, and sailing solo too! Nicky and John Buckett rigged their Bosun. Linda Spiller put a Radial on her Laser. Robin Spiller and Adam Hilton had standard sails on their usual boats.

Linda Spiller started well, took the lead and never lost it. But she was always chased by Adam Hilton’s Solo and for the first lap the Buckett Bosun was close behind too, Robin Spiller’s Streaker eventually replacing the Bosun as chasing boat. By the second lap the wind was much reduced and by the third the sun was out and warming the fleet. Leila farmer retired after two laps.

Covid 19 Sunday Race 15

Roger Heasman with Sally Wills in the Bosun were first over the start line on an improving day with moderate northwest wind speeds of around 12 mph. Jane Anderson’s Laser Radial had gained the lead by the middle of the Lake on the many-legged and testing beat up to Far. Sue Murray followed with the smaller Laser 4.7 and managed to keep the faster boat’s lead down to three minutes after an hour’s racing giving her the victory on handicap. The fleet had been reduced when Paul Anderson took to the water only to have cordage give way rendering his Laser uncontrollable. It had to be towed in by the safety boat. In addition Adam Hilton had capsized his Solo shortly before the start and took a minute and a half to get going. The Solo, pointing high in these moderate winds, managed to pass the Heasman/Wills Bosun as well as Vicki Duncalf’s Topper by the time they reached West White on the way back from the end of the Lake.

Covid 19 Sunday Race 16

The fleet was augmented by the welcome first 2020 outing for Nicky and John Buckett’s Bosun and by Graham Joyce’s Laser Full. The Joyce Laser may well have started first (if not it was Sue Murray’s 4.7) and he certainly took the lead on the beat up to Far at which buoy the next to gybe round were Jane Anderson, Sue Murray and Adam Hilton. Behind, a battle of the Bosuns raged, Nicky Buckett just managing to round Far in front of Roger Heasman.  On the way back Graham Joyce and Jane Anderson were neck and neck at Zebra but, discombobulated by a difficult gybe at Dam Green, Graham Joyce went the wrong side of the next course buoy and had to be excluded from the results. The Buckett Bosun pulled away from the Heasman one, Nicky Buckett craftily finding her own wind corridor parallel to the Devon bank. The 8.7 square metres of Adam Hilton’s Solo sail very gradually pulled him up towards Sue Murray’s 4.7 square metres, with the Solo eventually overtaking just before Dam Green on the last lap. A twelve second lead over the finish line was not nearly enough to counter the little Laser’s handicap advantage.

Wednesday 2nd September 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Wednesday Race 5

Bob Sampson’s Topper was first round the first buoy, Dam Green. (Yes, Bob was sailing a Club Topper. He said he wanted a change. He got one; he rigged the kicker wrongly and spent the race using main force to get the boom where he wanted it.) Adam Hilton’s red Bosun, a rarely sighted Paul Petvin crewing, had been first over the start line but was well downwind and already behind the other, Heasman/Wills, white Bosun by the time they rounded the first buoy. The battle wasn’t over however. The red Bosun led the white one on a couple of brief occasions during the race but Roger Heasman had got the gap to nearly a minute by the end. The wind at the start was south-westerly, fitful, not strong at all. It strengthened considerable during the race; those elegant lightweights, Heasman and Wills, had some trouble keeping the Bosun the right way up. The Spillers had left home in a howling wind and therefore with small sails for both the Laser and the Streaker. It took them some time to assert themselves, but Linda Spiller was up to second by the end of lap 1 and she led at the end of lap 2. Robin was second at the end of lap 2, leaving Bob Sampson at third on the water at the end of the race. The Topper’s marvellous handicap gave him the victory.

30th August 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Sunday Race 13

A fine fleet of eleven boats took to the waters of a Tamar Lake liberally sprinkled with kayaks and paddle boards. The sun shone and the winds, advertised as northerly, began with a good deal of east in them. They were unusually consistent all day, just strong enough to capsize a couple of helms doing the gybe at Dam Green. It was difficult for John Duncalf, continuing his generous run as Officer of the Day, to select a start line for competitors to beat up to. In the end he chose the far end of the Home 2 start line, with the fleet setting off towards the Dam. Bob Sampson (Laser Full) soon took over the lead, chased, as ever, by Jane Anderson with the smaller Radial sail on her Laser. Graham Joyce (Laser Full) went very well and stayed in third as did Robin Spiller (Streaker) in fourth. It was good to see Sue Murray (Laser 4.7) back after being attacked by a tree. Adam Hilton’s Solo lost its forestay and he retired. Louise – it was her turn to helm the Witchell Bosun – completed their first race to much celebration from the bank.

The start was moved to the near side of the Home 2 line and Adam Hilton, able to hear the horn this time, managed to get away first and lead up to Dam Green with Graham Joyce, Sue Murray and Linda Spiller in close attendance. But after that, on the way to West, the Sampson and Anderson express train steamed past and took over the race lead. Linda Spiller took up and held third place with Adam Hilton not going below fourth. Robin Spiller was absent from the race, the Streaker’s rudder having separated from its tiller. The handicaps again gave Jane Anderson the victory but demoted Bob Sampson to fourth below Sue Murray and Adam Hilton.

Wednesday 26th August 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Wednesday Race 4

Bob Sampson, intrepid as ever in his full sailed Laser, led off the line, led across to Inlet, and across to West and up to Far. Bob Sampson led all four laps of the race. Linda Spiller, with a Radial sail, followed him at an increasing distance, finishing four minutes behind. There was a good deal of north-westerly wind, gusting viciously in the familiar Tamar Lake manner. Adam Hilton followed the Lasers. He had put the smallest sail on his Aero but nonetheless spent the race exposing large areas of the boat’s bottom which attracted cheeky remarks from the OOD. John Dabbs was trying out the Club’s small sails on his Bosun; they are a little bigger than the Gull sails he usually retreats to in winds like this. He spent the race a couple of boat lengths away from Geoff Floyd, whose Solo was also flying a cut down sail. Geoff led at the end of the first lap, John led at the end of the next two and would have beaten Geoff over the finish line if he hadn’t gone about a few seconds too late when tacking from Dam Green to Home 1, allowing Geoff to sneak past. Out of control kayakers may have got in the Bosun’s way.

23rd August 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Sunday Race 11

Nine boats were signed on for the race but only seven started. The wind was coming from the west in powerful and unpredictable gusts but in the boat park, sheltered by the hill behind, it seemed quite benign. John Dabbs, crewless in his Bosun, once on the water, found that there was more power to these blasts than he could control single-handed. Geoff Floyd (Solo) suspected the same thing, left his boat on shore and boarded the Dabbs Bosun, unfortunately too late to take the start.

Bob Sampson was the first of the four Laser 4.7s in the race to cross the start line. Jane Anderson’s sister Laser followed, beginning a race long battle which she eventually won. Adam Hilton’s Solo started in front of the other Laser 4.7s of Linda Spiller and Penny Abbott. Roger Heasman with Sally Wills (Bosun) entered into the race’s other four lap struggle – with Robin Spiller (Streaker Wave) – which the Bosun won in the end by a handful of seconds.

The beat to West proved crucial each lap, many seconds could be lost by misjudging the tacks. Adam Hilton was finding the Solo untameable and soon let past Linda Spiller’s Laser behind him; Penny Abbott’s got past too on lap 3. But for many helms what will remain in the memory is the speed of the planing up to and back from Far. The Commodore came off the water saying nothing had ever taken him back up the Lake as fast as that wind on that last lap.

Covid 19 Sunday Race 12

There were still seven boats in the race because Geoff Floyd had climbed into his Solo  and Adam Hilton, who had left his Solo on the bank, had gone to crew for John Dabbs. Robin Spiller was resting his Streaker.

Jane Anderson restarted her contest with Bob Sampson by leading him over the line in front of Linda Spiller and the Dabbs /Hilton Bosun. But Bob Sampson was already ahead on lap 1 and got some lucky gusts that by the end had planed him a lead of over half a minute over Jane Anderson. Penny Abbott did well with the tacking to West, overtook Linda Spiller and stayed ahead. The Heasman/Wills Bosun with full-sized sails easily overtook the Dabbs/Hilton Bosun flying little ones. Geoff Floyd’s Solo, also with a small sail, eventually overtook as well and finished all of ten seconds ahead of John Dabbs.

16th August 2020 Race Report

Covid 19 Sunday Race 10

The various forecasters agreed that the wind would be very fitful indeed but could not agree whether the clouds would be black or the sun shining or thunder and lightning dominating the sky. In the event the wind was perfectly serviceable, if decidedly on the light side, and the rain held off for the noon race and the time to eat a sandwich afterwards. There were a few gleams of sun and no thunder.

Without these uncertainties there might have been more than the seven boats that took to the water. Three were Lasers, Bob Sampson’s and Linda Spiller’s flying big sails whereas Jane Anderson had put up a Radial. Robin Spiller was out in his Streaker, John Dabbs dithered between Bosun and Gull but went with the Gull on the curious grounds that it was easier to get in and out of the water. Vicki Duncalf was in her familiar Topper but didn’t have a very good day; too little wind. The unusual sight was the Commodore sailing his RS Aero with a size 9 sail for the first time.

The wind was coming over the Dam so the race had Dam Green as the first buoy. The beat up to it already made clear that the Lasers and the Aero were going to scrap for most of the race. Bob Sampson headed the fleet at the end of each lap but Jane Anderson was second on the first lap, Linda Spiller was second on the second and Adam Hilton was second on the third!

  1. Bob Sampson (Laser Full)
  2. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)
  3. John Dabbs (Gull)
  4. Linda Spiller (Laser Full)
  5. Adam Hilton (RS Aero 9)
  6. Robin Spiller (Streaker)
  7. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

The rain started and the wind dropped away so the second race was not run. Grateful thanks were given to John Duncalf, Officer of the Day.

Covid 19 Sunday Race 8

First across the start line was John Dabbs (Bosun), followed by Robin Spiller (Streaker) and then Graham Joyce, racing his Laser for the first time this season. John Dabbs maintained his advantage and rounded West in the lead but was being harried by first Robin Spiller and afterwards Linda Spiller (Laser Full).

It was a day of very light winds, sometimes no wind at all. The fleet was soon spread out across the middle of the Lake, as though glued to a sheet of glass. The yellow-hulled Solo twins (Geoff Floyd and Adam Hilton) found themselves in a central position and able to pick up any breaths the wind gods chose to emit. They reached Pinkie first after multiple slow motion tacks and Adam Hilton – Solo sail number 3300 – rounded it 33 minutes and 33 seconds after the start!

It was good to see a decent complement of Bosuns now that members from different households are permitted to sail double-handed. They were bunched together, Bob Sampson with a family crew, including small granddaughter Amelia, was close to Roger Heasman with regular crew Sally Wills, John Dabbs and the Witchells.

The run back to Dam Green was rather quicker, with sporadic puffs of wind bringing the rear of the fleet closer to the front where Adam Hilton still led Geoff Floyd and Linda Spiller. Nonetheless the race was shortened to one lap which took the leading boats over fifty minutes.

Covid 19 Sunday Race 9

John Duncalf, Officer of the Day, shortened the course by omitting the northernmost buoy in order to avoid having the fleet stuck again trying to get up there. But in the event the wind was a touch fresher and more consistent, even having the cheek to capsize Linda Spiller’s Laser at West. Laps of the short course – up to West, across to Home 2 and back to Dam Green – were taking about eight minutes.

Graham Joyce had a great start, but he was well to leeward and soon had to tack, then came across the Commodore on starboard, had to tack again and lost his advantage. John Dabbs was close behind followed by Robin Spiller. Linda Spiller soon took over the lead and held it throughout, with Adam Hilton behind her and with Robin Spiller threatening to overtake him. At the end of lap 1 the single handed Bosun pair of Bob Sampson (now without family) and John Dabbs powered past Home 1 but Graham Joyce, all unawares, went the wrong side of the buoy and could not benefit from his third position on the water at the finish.
